Mechanical neck pain is a very common symptom of our increasingly sedentary and desk-based lives. It can have several components including but not limited to the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and intervertebral discs. Posture, work-life, stress and trauma can all contribute to symptoms in the neck.
Chiropractic employs many techniques to assess and treat the causes of neck pain. These vary from patient to patient depending on age and health-status. The techniques include joint mobilisation and/or manipulation, muscle massage and stretching coupled with home stretching, icing and/or heating.
Rehabilitation and lifestyle changes are also addressed to alter any faulty movement or postural patterns which would otherwise tend towards a recurrence of the same symptoms.
It’s very important to sit comfortably, whether at work or at home or anywhere you are sedentary for long periods. If your feet don’t touch the floor, then the weight of your legs will pull the top of your pelvis forward (using the quad muscle group) which will increase and stress the lumbar curve. Always use a foot-rest or even just a stack of books to make sure that there’s no forward pulling.
